How can extractive companies and communities manage the changes that development brings?Newmont Ghana Gold Limited – part of the US-based Newmont Mining Corporation - recently built a gold mine in the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana in West Africa. There had never been any mining in this region; in fact, no large scale economic or industrial activity of any kind. The local people are farmers, and mostly subsistence farmers. The company is also planning another mine, in the Akyem area of the Eastern Region in Ghana. This is the story of some of the challenges the company and the communities have faced with these projects and how they are trying to work together for mutual benefit.
